Natural Rhinoplasty, Using Ear Cartilage to Increase the Height
Hello, I am Dr. Lee SangKyun, the head of
TS Plastic Surgery.
I have previously talked about the 6
materials used for rhinoplasty and the 5 angles to consider during surgery, but
today I would like to explain in more detail about rhinoplasty using ear
cartilage among the various materials.

Nasal Tip Surgery
The most central part of our face is the
nose, and the tip of the nose is the most prominent feature. Because it's in
the center of the face, the shape of the nose can change the overall impression
and because it's protruded, it can be easily exposed to external pressure or
stimuli.
The nasal bridge is mainly made of bone,
which can be fixed with implants such as silicone, but the tip of the nose is
made of cartilage, which requires flexibility in movement, especially since the
skin is thin and sensitive, which is why it is safer and more natural to use
autologous cartilage, and the septum and auricular cartilage are the two most
commonly used.
Septal Nasal Tip - Nasal Internal Structure Changes
The nasal septum cartilage is the cartilage
that forms the lower third of the nose, and it supports the lower part of the
nose along with the upper nasal bones.
If the nasal septum is used for tip
surgery, it will be harvested and extended to increase the height of the nasal
tip.
However, if too much of the septum is
harvested, the support for the bridge of the nose may be weakened, resulting in
a saddle nose, and if the nasal tip is extended using weak septal cartilage,
the height of the tip may decrease over time, or the nasal bridge may curve.
Ear Cartilage Used for the Nasal Tip - Add Ear Cartilage to the Nose
Rhinoplasty using auricular cartilage is a
method of raising the tip of the nose by harvesting auricular cartilage, which
does not alter or damage the tip of the nose, but only transplants the
cartilage to increase its height, so there are no side effects such as weakened
support for the bridge of the nose.

Adding Auricular Cartilage |
Reinforce the nasal
tip by adding auricular cartilage to support it, then add auricular cartilage
to raise the nasal tip. |
Rhinoplasty using auricular cartilage has
been performed for centuries, and as more patients seek high, glamorous nose
jobs, the use of nasal septum or rib cartilage is increasing, but if you want a
natural-looking nose, there's no better material than auricular cartilage.
The Auricular Cartilage Closest to the Natural Nose
Ear cartilage has great elasticity and is
slightly rounded, making it a great material for naturalizing or extending the
tip of the nose. Because it's autologous, it won't be rejected and won't cause
problems like being able to see through it.
Also, because it is a soft elastic
cartilage, the shape of the nose tip comes out well, and unlike the septum,
which is somewhat stiff, the movement of the tip is soft and natural even after
surgery, making it feel closer to the natural nose.
Nasal tip surgery using a septum may also
use additional auricular cartilage to extend the tip of the nose or naturalize
its shape, and if the septum cartilage is not strong enough, auricular
cartilage may be added to strengthen support.

If you're worried about bending or drooping, a Natural Nose is perfect for you.
Recently, one of the most common side
effects of rhinoplasty is the drooping and bending of the nasal tip. As more
people prefer a higher, more fancy nose, the number of nasal tip surgeries
using a septum has increased, and in some cases, a septum with a small size and
weak strength is used to raise the tip, which seems to be causing these side
effects.
The tip of the nose is not a fixed area,
but an area that is constantly stressed due to peripheral movements such as
opening the mouth or yawning. If the support of the cartilage is weak, or too
high, it is bound to bend or drop due to constant exposure to these external
pressures.
If you are worried about side effects such
as bending or dropping of the nasal tip after rhinoplasty, you may be better
suited for a natural nose, which can give you a smarter appearance at a natural
height, rather than trying to increase the height of the bridge or tip in a
fancy style.
Since septum isn't used for a natural
style, it does not matter if you have a small or weak septum, and by using
auricular cartilage, you can strengthen the support of the tip of the nose to
prevent bending or drooping.
