A ‘sausage-like eyelid’, the most common eyelid for revision surgery

There could be various reasons for revision surgery such as the loose double eyelid, dissatisfaction with the shape, unnatural shape, a visible scar, and so on. One of the most common reasons among them is the thickness of double eyelids. It happened when the patient wanted bigger eyes from the primary surgery and only the thick eyelids came out without any improvement of the eye size which is well known as a ‘sausage-like eye’ in Korea. People call it because the eyelid bulged like a sausage.

 

The reason why the eyelid becomes like a sausage

There are two main reasons why it becomes like a sausage.

First, you wanted it to be very thick for a dramatic shape. 

Second, the wrong location for the fixation of the eyelid.

Actually, there are so many patients coming to TS for revision surgery who have sausage-like eyes caused by an ‘accordion effect’.

Revision surgery for a ‘sausage-like eye’, What is the ‘double-lined method’?

We used to wait for a long time until the lids get loose to remove it including the scar from the primary surgery. However, these days, we do not have to wait so long by using the ‘double-lined method’. It is a new method to make a new double eyelid underneath the previous one at the same time of releasing the previous one.

 

1. In case of having enough skin, ‘skin excision method’

è  If the patient has enough skin, it is possible to go with the ‘skin excision method’ that removes the previous surgical scar and creates a new line.

 

2. In case of not having enough skin, ‘double line method’

è  If the patient has not enough skin, go with the ‘double-lined method’ that breaks up adhesions and creates a new line for an ideal double eyelid.

 

<Double-Lined Method>

1. Make an incision underneath the previous line to create a new double eyelid.

2. Desquamate and break up adhesions of the previous line.

3. Fat repositioning or grafting may be necessary to prevent the recurrence of adhesions.

 

‘Double-lined method’ makes us possible to proceed with revision surgery without a skin excision or waiting until the skin gets loose. Satisfaction with the method is high since it is very effective with the ‘sausage-looking eye’.

 

 

What you need to pay attention when it comes to ‘double-lined method’

However, it is not a simple method or possible for everybody. You might be having double or triple eyelid if adhesions were not broken up properly, or a thick folded line if the tissue between the previous line and the new line adhere. To prevent the recurrence of adhesions, fat repositioning or grafting may be necessary that requires a very high technique of the surgeon.

 

Double eyelid revision surgery, customized diagnosis is essential to avoid repetitive surgery!

Even though they are all like a ‘sausage-look lid’, the ‘double-lined method’ might not be suitable for all. There might be some cases that can’t be done without the ‘double line method’. However, there also might be other cases that should be done with a ‘skin excision method’ for a better aesthetic reason not to leave two lines.

 

A ‘skin excision method’ would be the best way to create a single line if there is enough skin to remove with the excessive area. However, if this method is used when there is not enough skin or without considering the function of the eye, it might cause functional problems such as a dry eye, not fully closed eyes, and so on. Therefore, it is important to find a specialist to have a detailed consultation to find out whether you have sufficient skin and muscle for the surgery, anatomical possibility of revision surgery as well as considering functional characteristics for the best suitable surgical method.
